It’s finally here. After months of planning, preparation and growing excitement you are ready to move into your new home. But, there are a few things you can do to make the move as smooth as the buying or rental process was. And all it takes is a little organisation!

Label everything

Even if you don’t have a Type A personality, moving homes is the time to channel your inner Monica. When you are packing boxes, make sure to label them all with as much information as possible. List the contents, write what room they are from and star-rate their priority. Colour coding the boxes according to the rooms is super helpful too and will allow you to quickly identify the one you need. This means you can put the right box in the right room as soon as you arrive in your new home.

Gather the necessities

Make a list of all the things you will need on the big day and start gathering them together. Create a caddy for things like pens, markers, sticky tape and scissors and keep it on hand. Another good idea is to pack an overnight bag with some basic living essentials. You never know when you might need want to brush your teeth or change your shirt. This will also come in handy if after a long day of lugging furniture you want to just fall into bed. So make sure things like blankets and pillows are easily accessible. Don’t forget about food either, easy-to-eat snacks that will keep energy levels high should be a priority. Check out Earth Inspired Salads for guilt-free take-outs that will keep you going all day.

Protect your family

In showbiz they say never work with children or animals but this can also apply when you’re moving into a new home. Moving day will be full of tight schedules, heavy lifting and open doors so it might make sense to keep your kids and pets out of harm’s way. Arrange for friends, family or hire professionals to mind your smallies for a few hours so that you can concentrate fully on the tasks at hand. If this isn’t a possibility, make sure you have enough games and refreshments to keep them entertained and content.

Have a clear-out

Use the move as an excuse to clear your life of clutter. Guaranteed that when you begin packing, you’ll be shocked at the volume of things you have collected over the years – now is the time to make some space. Decluttering your belongings can have a positive impact on other areas of your life. It’s a great opportunity to hold a garage sale or donate some of your old belongings to a worthy cause. This will also reduce the unpacking and leave space to buy new things! Win Win!!

Take Photos

If you’re moving into a rental property, taking photos are a must! Take photos of every nook and cranny because you don’t know when you will need them. Perhaps the previous tenant damaged part of the apartment and managed to hide it from the landlord, you don’t want to have to take responsibility for damage that you didn’t cause. Taking photos upon moving in is the safest way for both parties to document any issues with the property. You both take note of any issues now, so that there isn’t any issues later when you are moving out.

Moving homes should be an exciting time – an opportunity to get to know new people and places.  But being informed and thorough before you start the process will ensure that you can relax and enjoy the transition as much as possible.
